Jozani Forest - Butterfly Center

Departure: daily 9:00 am - 3:00 am (2h30)

This forest is one of the last sanctuaries in the world of the red colubus monkey. The monkeys are wild, but it is possible to get close to them and they carry on with their normal activities as if human visitors did not exist. Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative. A walk through this impressive flora and fauna is one of the highlights of Zanzibar.

In Jozani, you will also visit the Mangrove swamp and walk through the Mangrove forest.

Butterfly Center
Departure: daily 9:00am - 3:00pm (30-40mins)

Usually combined with Jozani Forest, the Zanzibar Butterfly Center (ZBC) is an interactive butterfly exhibit near Jozani-Chawka Bay National Park, although outside the park boundaries. The exhibit consists of a tropical net garden with typically hundreds of butterflies, all of which are native to Zanzibar. The enclosure is one of the largest butterfly exhibits in Africa and offers Zanzibar residents and tourists an interactive and visual environment to learn more about butterflies.

At the ZBC, it is possible to see butterflies feeding and flying at close quarters and witness the complete life cycle of many species. The butterflies (in chrysalis form) are raised sustainably by the people of the villages around Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park.

Our friendly and knowledgeable guides will greet you upon arrival and explain during the tour the background of the project and the life cycle and ecology of the butterflies.
